A new community education initiative, being delivered by Central Gippsland Health, is designed to build confidence and practical skills for parents and carers navigating challenging conversations with adolescents.
Talking to Your Teen – Health and Lifestyle Series comprises three sessions covering topics that significantly impact young people’s wellbeing today and things parents and carers find challenging to navigate: healthy eating and body image, harm reduction and mental health and wellbeing.
CGH Director Community and Allied Health Services, Pele Reeve, said each session was designed to be practical, supportive and evidence-informed, offering parents and carers clear strategies to foster open, respectful communication with their teens. It will provide attendees with tools to have honest conversations, recognise early warning signs and support young people to make safer, healthier choices.
“Many parents tell us they want to support their teens but don’t always know how to start these conversations,” Ms Reeve said. “This series creates a safe, non-judgemental space to learn, ask questions and gain practical guidance from experienced health professionals.”
Sessions will include presentations from CGH Allied Health professionals and opportunities for questions:
Wednesday 13 May: Healthy eating and body image - Encouraging balanced nutrition and supporting positive self-esteem and resilience
Wednesday 20 May: Harm Reduction - Understanding risk-taking behaviours and having realistic, safety-focused conversations
Wednesday 27 May: Mental Health - Recognising signs of stress, anxiety and depression, and knowing when and how to seek help
The sessions will be held at 5.30pm in the CGH Conference Room, Ground Floor Community Services Building, enter via Palmerston Street.
Parents, guardians or carers of teens between 12 and 18 years can register via the QR code or at https://shorturl.at/4VlBF
