The Friends of the CGHS (Sale Hospital Auxiliary) are reaching out to the community for new members.

The group is dedicated to raising funds to support the health service. Passionate about volunteering, the members want to ensure their work continues in providing much needed equipment that is making a difference to staff and patients alike.

They are calling on interested community members to join them. They meet once a month and volunteers can be involved as little or as much as they like; from volunteering on special occasions to supporting the office bearers.

The Sale Hospital auxiliary (now the Friends of CGHS) began in 1932, making it 93 years old. It started as the Australian Women’s National League, which was formally acknowledged as a hospital auxiliary in July 1929.

In addition to seeking to increase the power of women as a political force, the league members were anxious to help the hospital raise money for equipment by serving afternoon tea and other delicacies at the hospital. This auxiliary lasted only a short time but its members formed the nucleus of the Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, the forerunner of the Gippsland Base Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, the Gippsland Base Hospital Auxiliary and today’s Friends of CGHS.

The first meeting in 1932 was attended by 23 local women. Members were willing and dedicated supporters of the hospital and ran the hospital kiosk for many years, among other fundraising activities.

Today, the Friends of CGHS continue to raise funds for the purchase of equipment across the health service. This includes running the annual Christmas gift wrapping service in the Gippsland Centre, stalls for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, and Easter raffles.

Anyone interested in joining the auxiliary should contact CGH Manager Executive Services, Rebecca Gunning, on 5143 8319.
