A major fundraising event for Central Gippsland Health (CGH) is in its fourth year and organisers are hoping October’s Brickstravaganza will add to the $30,000 already raised.

Hosted by Bricks to the World in Maffra, Brickstravaganza 2018 – Creations from LEGO will be held at the Maffra Memorial Hall on 19, 20 and 21 October.

Diagnosed as a Type 1 Diabetic 25 years ago, Brickstravaganza organiser and local business owner, Brad Spunner, understands the importance of renal health and the money raised from the event will go directly to Sale Hospital’s dialysis unit.

Dialysis is a treatment that filters and purifies the blood using a machine,” Mr Spunner explained. “Raising money so people within my community can experience quality medical care just seemed like common sense to me.”

Held annually over the past three years, the money raised from the entry fee to Brickstravaganza has enabled CGH to purchase two dialysis chairs, two procedure trolleys, a portable ultrasound machine and a specialised trolley and equipment for the MRI unit.

CGH Chief Executive Officer, Dr Frank Evans, said Mr Spunner’s intentions were inspiring.

“Brad understands the risks of what might happen when a Type 1 Diabetic doesn’t get the right treatment,” Dr Evans explained. “The equipment CGH has been able to purchase thanks to Brickstravaganza’s fundraising efforts has improved the quality of care and ultimately, the quality of life, for our dialysis patients.”

This year’s Brickstravaganza will feature a display of LEGO creations with models from builders locally and interstate, including a LEGO train layout and models built by Australia’s only LEGO professional, Ryan McNaught.

A special educational session is being organised during the event on Friday 19 October where local schools can book a private visit.

“These school sessions are of approximately 30 – 45 minutes long and allow students to admire the LEGO works more closely,” Mr Spunner said. “Each group will hear a short talk on LEGO and the design and construction of some of the LEGO models.”
